Weights of Art When Weight Becomes Image
Solo exhibition, 17.10–07.11.2026, Imagine Visual Arts, Paiania
Imagine Visual Arts presents the solo exhibition “Weights of Art”, curated by art historian Helen Gatsa.
What does it mean to lift a weight? And what happens when the weight the body lifts becomes the burden carried by memory, desire, history and culture? With these questions, visual artist Ennios-Eros Giogos presents his solo exhibition Weights of Art at Imagine Visual Arts, curated by art historian Helen Gatsa. The exhibition opens on Saturday 17 October 2026, from 19:00 to 22:00, and remains open to the public until 7 November 2026.
A gorilla, Socrates, a pair of lips and a burger meet on the same handle. Sculpture becomes the field in which ancient philosophy, consumer culture, animal strength and contemporary self-image take on a shared volume.
The series starts from an object we recognise at first glance: the kettlebell, made for effort, endurance and repetition. The artist keeps its characteristic spherical mass and arched handle as a constant morphological base, and on it builds a wide range of images and symbols: animals, faces, bodies, historical figures, archetypal forms, everyday objects and symbols of contemporary society. Glossy blacks, bronze tones and vivid reds, yellows and pinks give the series the immediacy and energy of the Pop image.
In the artist’s own words: “The kettlebell, or drami, after the old Greek unit of weight, condenses for me the dual meaning of weight: as a physical load and as an existential responsibility towards the things we are bound to work through. On this form I make works about the questions that preoccupy me.” The statement distils the central axis of the series. An object of physical exercise becomes a sculptural vehicle for thought. The gesture of lifting moves from the body to memory, and from muscular effort to the realm of ideas.
The exhibition is organised in sections (Animal, Beauty, Minimal, Classics, Food, Sport, Ego) and maps what preoccupies and shapes the contemporary individual: strength, beauty, origin, philosophy, desire, competition, self-image and decay.
In Animal, strength and instinct take the form of the gorilla, the lion, the bear and the dog. In Classics, Socrates and Marcus Aurelius remind us that philosophy has always been an exercise of the self. In Minimal, the Cycladic figurine meets the contemporary instrument of physical training, while Trinity Torus carries form towards geometry and topology. In Ego, the hand grenade inscribed “Army of One”, the pink skull and the warrior form the sharpest edge of the exhibition.
The choice of the kettlebell enters into dialogue with the long tradition of modern and contemporary art, from the ready-made to Pop Art and the practices of appropriation, in which the everyday object crosses into the field of art and takes on new meanings. At the same time, the three-dimensional form activates the viewer’s bodily memory. The handle, the mass and the gesture of lifting are recognised almost instinctively. Before the sculpture, the eye sees an object and the body recalls a movement. It is precisely there that the notion of weight shifts from its physical dimension to its cultural one.
The series is produced in numbered limited editions in three scales, Heavyweight, Middleweight and Featherweight, names borrowed from sport that carry the logic of measurement from physical performance into sculpture. Scale thus becomes part of the artistic idea. Size, mass and repetition shape a single system of works, in which the same morphological principle can take on a different intensity, presence and meaning.
The opening night will have a character of its own, with STOLI® Vodka as Opening Sponsor.
