A paper by Ennios-Eros Giogos at the Round Table “Local Culture and Local Cultural Heritage in the Mesogeia Region”, Municipality of Markopoulo Mesogaias. The video of the talk is in Greek.

Abstract

The paper approached the Aristotelian concept of art and friendship as a joint in the creation of collectives, taking as its case study the Visual Artists Association of Mesogaia — a self-organised initiative of citizens and visual artists based in the Mesogeia region.

It examined the kinds of friendship and their relation to eudaimonia, both of the individual and of the city, as well as the background of the Delphic Maxims, which foreshadowed the Aristotelian distinctions. It then traced how, through the example of art as poiesis, we are led to the concept of perfect friendship and of the good (agathon).

Finally, it examined how this scheme has been realised in collectives such as the Visual Artists Association of Mesogaia, whose activity, history and relationship with the Municipality of Markopoulo were presented.
