Solo Exhibition "Comboskine"

The solo exhibition of contemporary art by the visual artist Ennios-Eros Giogos, titled “Comboskine”, opens on Thursday 22 September at the Cultural Centre of Rafina.

As the art historian Elli Leventaki notes in her text: “The comboskine – the Orthodox prayer rope – is a contemporary token resting on a very old idea, one reflected in a primary and recognisable form associated with concentration, wish and remembrance. Its deeply personal and symbolic character relates to the emotional charge the object carries, which is transubstantiated into something almost monumental through the multiplicity of its representations.

Seeking to approach notions such as spirituality and mourning, the artist Ennios-Eros Giogos reflects on his own token in order to give it new breath as an artistic entity, through the deconstruction and recomposition of its form. The result is a series of many small-scale paintings that work in complement to one another and record different aspects of the form, appearance and texture of the object.

Exploring further the very morphology of the prayer rope’s shape, the work seeks to create connections of meaning between East and West, between local traditions and practices of meditation. Thus, through a series of symbolic representations, the artist brings into the public sphere images of a precious object of his own, proposing artistic ways of viewing it and inviting the visitor to consider what their own personal token might be.”
